Volume converters

Convert liquid volumes between milliliters, liters and US fluid ounces — handy for recipes and drinks.

About volume conversion

Liquid volume is where the American, British and metric systems collide most visibly: cups, tablespoons, fluid ounces, pints and gallons on one side, milliliters and liters on the other — and the US and imperial versions of the same names differ by up to 20 %. The converters on this page use US customary units, the ones behind American recipes, drink sizes and fuel prices.

Which converter do I need?

Recipes. Cups to milliliters and tablespoons to milliliters for American recipes in a metric kitchen; the reverse for European recipes with American measuring cups. Drinks and bottles. Fluid ounces to milliliters and liters — coffee sizes, cans, water bottles, perfume. Fuel, pools and tanks. Gallons to liters.

US versus imperial

An imperial pint is 568 ml against the US pint's 473 ml; an imperial gallon is 4.546 L against 3.785 L; the imperial fluid ounce is 4 % smaller than the US one. Old British recipes and some Canadian labels use imperial measures. Australia adds its own twist with a 250 ml cup and a 20 ml tablespoon.
