Grams to ounces

Grams are the metric unit for anything small enough to hold in your hand — food portions, letters, jewellery, coffee beans. Ounces are their counterpart in the United States and, informally, in the United Kingdom. Because one avoirdupois ounce is 28.3495 grams, converting the other way means dividing: grams ÷ 28.3495 = ounces.

Quick mental math

Dividing by 28.35 is awkward without a calculator, so two shortcuts help. First, 100 g is about 3.5 oz, so 200 g ≈ 7 oz, 300 g ≈ 10.5 oz and so on. Second, 30 g is roughly 1 oz (slightly more), which is close enough for portion sizes.

Where it matters

Cooking. Following a European recipe with an American scale, or reading a nutrition label that lists grams when your diet plan counts ounces. Coffee and tea. Brewing guides quote doses in grams; bags are often sold in 12 oz or 16 oz sizes. Post. A 20 g letter is 0.7 oz, comfortably inside the one-ounce first-class limit.

Weight versus volume

This conversion is for mass. If your recipe says "8 fl oz" of milk, that is a volume — use the milliliters to fluid ounces converter instead. The two ounces happen to coincide for water (one fluid ounce of water weighs about one ounce), which is where the confusion comes from, but for oil, honey or flour the numbers diverge quickly.

Precious metals

Bullion is priced per troy ounce (31.1035 g), not per avoirdupois ounce. 100 g of gold is 3.215 troy ounces, not 3.53.
