Fluid ounces to milliliters

The fluid ounce is the small unit of liquid volume in the US customary system: 8 fluid ounces make a cup, 16 a pint and 128 a gallon. One US fluid ounce is 29.5735 milliliters. The imperial fluid ounce, still seen on some British packaging, is slightly smaller at 28.4131 ml; this page uses the US value, which is the one behind American recipes, drink sizes and cosmetics labels.

Converting

Multiply fluid ounces by 29.5735. For quick estimates, 30 ml per ounce is the number most people carry in their heads — it overstates the result by 1.4 %, which is fine for a glass of juice and slightly generous for a cocktail.

Drinks and bottles

Coffee-shop sizes are quoted in fluid ounces in the US: 12 oz "tall" is 355 ml, 16 oz "grande" is 473 ml, 20 oz "venti" is 591 ml. A standard 750 ml wine bottle is 25.4 fl oz; a 330 ml beer bottle is 11.2 fl oz. Baby formula and medicine instructions often list doses in both units — check which one the measuring cup in the box is marked in.

Cosmetics and travel

Airline liquid limits are 100 ml per container, which is 3.4 fl oz — the reason travel bottles are sold in that odd-looking size. Perfume comes in 1 fl oz (30 ml), 1.7 fl oz (50 ml) and 3.4 fl oz (100 ml) bottles.

Weight ounces are different

A fluid ounce measures space, not mass. For water the two nearly coincide (1 fl oz of water weighs 1.04 oz), but a fluid ounce of honey weighs about 1.5 oz and a fluid ounce of flour only about 0.5 oz. For weights, use the ounces-to-grams converter instead.
