What is a stone?

The stone is a unit of body weight used mainly in the United Kingdom and Ireland. One stone is 14 pounds, which is 6.35029 kilograms. A person's weight is typically written as stones and pounds — "11 st 4 lb" — rather than as a decimal number of stones, so converting from kilograms usually takes two steps.

Kilograms to stones by hand

Divide the kilograms by 6.35029. The whole number is the stones. Multiply the decimal remainder by 14 to get the pounds. Example: 75 kg ÷ 6.35029 = 11.81 st; 0.81 × 14 = 11.3, so 75 kg is about 11 st 11 lb.

A rough mental version: divide by 6.35, or multiply the kilograms by 0.157. For a quick check, 10 kg is a little more than 1.5 stone and 50 kg is a little less than 8 stone.

Where the unit survives

Doctors' scales, gym progress charts, boxing and rugby programmes, and everyday conversation in Britain and Ireland still use stones, even though official documents and food packaging switched to kilograms decades ago. Australia, Canada and New Zealand largely abandoned the stone, and it was never common in the United States, where body weight is given in pounds alone.

Stones, pounds and kilograms together

If you track your weight on a metric scale but talk about it in stones, note that one pound is 0.4536 kg, so a change of 1 kg is a little over 2 pounds. Losing 3 kg means dropping from, say, 12 st 8 lb to just under 12 st 2 lb.
