Square feet to square meters

Square feet are the standard unit of floor area in the United States and are common in Canada, the UK, India, Hong Kong and Singapore. Elsewhere, and in all scientific and engineering work, area is measured in square meters. The exact relationship comes from the definition of the foot (0.3048 m): 1 sq ft = 0.092903 m², so square feet ÷ 10.7639 = square meters.

Reading listings

US listings quote "living area" in square feet and often exclude garages and unfinished basements. Converted to square meters, a "2 000 sq ft home" (186 m²) is large by European standards, where an average new apartment is 60–90 m². Land is a separate matter: lots are quoted in acres or square feet in the US and in square meters or hectares elsewhere — 1 acre is 43 560 sq ft or 4 047 m².

Materials and rent

Rent per square foot converts to rent per square meter by multiplying by 10.7639: $3 per sq ft per month is $32.29 per m². Carpet, vinyl and roofing are priced per square foot in the US; multiply the quoted price by 10.76 to compare with a metric quote per square meter.

Don't confuse feet and square feet

Convert lengths to meters first, then multiply, or convert the area directly with the factor above — but never mix the two. A 12 ft × 15 ft room is 180 sq ft = 16.72 m²; converting each side (3.66 m × 4.57 m) gives the same 16.7 m².
